What would a 16th Century (Tudor) 'Wanted' poster look like?
My 8 year old son has to make a Tudor Wanted poster for school and I'm not sure what they looked like back then. I've tried Google and only came up with 'Wild West' type now I'm guess they're not the same type.
Can you guide us in the right direction please.
They did not use 'Wanted' posters in the Tudor period. They did not even usually mount a widespread search for a criminal; if he got away from the area where he committed the crime, he was generally safe. This was true for the common run of criminals as late as the 18thC - Dick Turpin got safely away from the Home Counties and was hanged in York only because he continued to steal there as well.
By the mid-17thC something similar to 'Wanted' notices was being done, but only in the case of very high-profile escapers, and not as a poster publicly displayed. The authorities of the Commonwealth, when Charles II was on the run, circulated his description (about two yards high, with black curling hair... etc). The description was sent to local magistrates and ordered to be read out in church.
By 1745, there were such posters. Some fugitives from the Jacobite rising in 1745 were caught as a result of being described in leaflets and posters circulated in the area where they were thought to be. They were small by modern standards (about 12" by 8") and printed in very black heavily-leaded type. By the last years of the 18thC the newspapers were also being used to spread descriptions of wanted men.
I suggest that your son bases his (purely imaginary) poster on one from the Wild West period, but downloads a picture of someone in Elizabethan costume for the centrepiece. It is also worthwhile checking the clothes an Elizabethan of the appropriate social class might have worn to get the period detail right.
