Paul Smith Brings High-Fashion to Williamsburg
In another sign of change for the neighborhood, British clothing designer Paul Smith has brought his signature brand of quirky designer clothes to Williamsburg. On October 6, the British company opened a new store at 280 Grand St., near the corner of Grand and Roebling. The company has several locations in Manhattan, but this is its first in Brooklyn. The one-room "sales shop" will be selling discounted overstock items year-round, but with most shirts in the $100 to $200 price range, it may not look like a bargain to most shoppers.
Paul Smith got his start in Nottingham, England in 1970, and gained his reputation in the fashion world during the 1980s. He is most known for quirky men's business-wear, displayed prominently in his Grand Street shop, which often features multi-colored pinstripes, bright polka dots or eccentric prints. Although the store focuses on dress clothes, it also sells pens, books, notebooks, perfumes and colognes, and other accessories from Smith's variety of design collections.
Company spokesperson Cindy Veira said Williamsburg was chosen because it is a "fresh location, a fresh neighborhood, in keeping with pursuing the company's non-traditional, creative ideal." Veira said Smith personally approved of the location. When asked if other stores in Brooklyn might follow, Veira said she hoped so, noting that Paul Smith had "always pioneered new retail spaces."
Both in its high-fashion orientation and its prices, the store certainly stands in contrast to much of the immediate neighborhood. The shop shares a block with Trash Bar and Clem's, while hipster boutiques and vintage shops dominate the neighborhood clothing scene. Paul Smith may be a good indication of where Williamsburg is headed.
That's Paul Smith, not Paul Reed Smith. Paul Smith, the clothing designer, collaborated with Vintage Guitars in order to produce this – the Paul Smith acoustic guitar.
It's a 3/4-sized acoustic that Paul Smith is refers to in most of his marketing as a ‘children's guitar' but could really serve as a travel guitar for the discerning clothes-horse who wants to strum as fashionably as he or she dresses.
The guitar has a spruce top and mahogany body. The neck is maple and the fingerboard, rosewood. Specifications list a mahogany bridge but the image makes it look rosewood (which would be more usual) – I suppose it may be dyed.
Finish is black gloss only and it has a BLUE binding. Sorry for the caps but it really is BLUE. The soundhole rosette features the Paul Smith 'signature stripe' and the headstock bears the Paul Smith 'signature signature'.
It comes with a gig back sporting a small Paul Smith tag and another 'signature stripe' on another small tag.
Why people might want a fashion-designer's signature, 3/4-sized, guitar is beyond my meagre understanding but, should you be interested, you can buy on at Paul Smith (or in his stores) for 180 or 330.
