Why Kings do not wear the crown?
I was looking to some Royal portraits on the internet and I found something very strange. NONE of the Kings, Queens, Emperors, Empresses, Tsars or Kaisers are wearing the crown on their portraits! I looked at the paintings of Louis XIII, Louis XIV, Louis XV, XVI; XVIII of France, Napoleon, Queen Victoria, King George V, Empress Maria Theresa of Austria, Kaiser William of Germany, Emperor Franz Joseph of the Austro Hungarian Empire, Empress Catherine the Great of all the Russias etc.. and the crown is ALWAYS at their sides on cushion or on a table and I wonder why! Why don´t they wear it on their heads and instead they put on a table? is there a special meaning to that? I´m just curious....
A crown is heavy! That's why even in the British monarchy, the most "traditional" in Europe, there are only two occasions on which the monarch wears a crown - the Coronation, and the annual State Opening of Parliament. St Edward's Crown, used only for coronations, is made of solid gold and 444 precious stones with a velvet cap inside to cushion the wearer's head, and weighs 4 lb 12 oz. That's a LOT for a hat, so even in the coronation service, the monarch doesn't wear it for long and replaces it with the Imperial State Crown, which weighs 2 lb. Queen Victoria and King Edward VII were in fact crowned with the Imperial State Crown precisely because it is lighter and they objected to the weight of St Edward's Crown.
The Imperial State Crown is also used once a year for the State Opening of Parliament, during which the Queen travels to the Houses of Parliament, robes and puts on the crown, processes to the House of Lords, and when the House of Commons have been summoned to her presence, she reads a speech written for her by the Prime Minister setting out the government's plans for the next year. Then she very soon goes back to the robing room, takes the crown and robes off, and returns to the palace. Queen Elizabeth II has been seen by her staff on the morning of State Openings wearing the crown for practice while she eats breakfast, just to get used to the weight.
