Did Mark Twain almost smuggle cocaine to the USA?
According to the video "Mark Twain for Students!" Mark Twain almost smuggled cocaine to the States before becoming a writer. The only reason why he didn't do it is because he wanted to become a river boat captain. Is that true? Also, is it true that he didn't become a river boat captain after he spent years training and past the test?
Not even close. Mark Twain died in 1910. Cocaine wasn't a controlled substance until 1970:

Another thing- it was so common around the end of Twain's life, it was used in the old Coca-Cola formula. Way back then, the pure syrup could be purchased in pharmacies as an aid for indigestion and upset stomach.
There weren't riverboat tests, they were Apprenticeships. I'm posting a link to a detailed account of Twain's history.
