What is a hardy 10'/12' umbrella shaped tree for a very small backyard?
The need here is to provide a privacy factor since the houses are so close together. A line of small trees planted along a side fence will obscure our yard from the 2nd story window of the house next door. We are in zone 8 and would appreciate any and all suggestions
If it is not too hot in your backyard perhaps a Japanese maple may suit you (acer palmatum). There are many colours and your would get autumn colours. You may need a slightly bigger tree to obscure your yard though.
Acer negundo 'Flamingo' would give you a nice variegated tree.Most of the ornamental (no fruit) flowering fruit trees may suit you also, especially the Crab apples (Malus) or plums (prunus). Check mail order companies, they usually have lovely pictures and you can check them out easily. Good hunting.
