I want to make a 1847-1859 Grimsley cavalry saddle. Where can I find a pattern for the leather?
I have just about all I need: saddle tree, hardware, leather, etc., but I need a pattern to cut out the leather. Can anyone help?
I have two thoughts for your search: -
[1] You can buy a reproduction Grimsley 1847 Dragoon saddle online from the link at [1] below. That source is not the manufacturer of the saddle: it is just a merchant. But their supplying saddler, somewhere, is making reproduction Grimsley saddles to order (6 to 8 weeks delivery).
Obviously, that saddler has a pattern for the job. It is just possible that you might be able to persuade that saddler to sell you a copy of his Grimsley pattern, as long as you could convince him that you are not setting up as a competitor.
The first problem, however, is to get into touch with that (anonymous) saddler. Maybe you could try doing that through the merchant at link [1].
[2] The other route I would suggest is to sign up and join a specialist forum, the "Society of the Military Horse" (see link 2). Once you become a member, you can post your question about the Grimsley pattern on their website. Because the Society consists of enthusiasts for the old Horse Cavalry, I think that you have a much better chance of finding good information or leads there than you do on a generalist forum like YA.
