A Short History Regarding The Impression Of Japanese Art On Europe
After the first commercial contacts with Europe in the sixteenth century, notably with Portugal, Holland and Spain, Japan shut its doors to Westerners at the beginning of the Edo era (1603-1868). Only Korea, China and Holland had the privilege of dealing with the Japanese. It was only in 1854 that the first commercial treaty was signed with the West. This treaty led to the country's openness to the West and promoted trade relations. Many merchants brought back art objects and Japanese prints in Europe.
Hence, Japan became a source of inspiration for French and European painters.
The first agreement signed with France in October 1858 will gradually introduce many works. After the Universal Exposition of 1867, a Japanese born in arranging a monthly dinner.At these dinners was almost all Japanese. The Expo had an immediate impact on the Impressionist movement.
