How is the pH level of a bacteria culture in an agar petri dish measured? As accurate as possible please.?
I'm doing a project to measure the acidity/pH level produced from bacteria within the mouth cultured inside an environment with different concentrations of sugar added. Is it possible to measure qualitatively the pH level of the result in the agar dish?
There are many agar that had pH indicator dyes added into them. One of the most common is phenol red. Since many bacteria ferment sugars, acids are common bi-products of this fermentation. The acid level will turn the phenol red into a yellow color. It is very easy to measure the pH level "qualitatively" in agars. All you need is litmus paper or some other pH indicator paper. These paper pH indicators are very cheap and easy to find. But, the rule of thumb is, if a bacteria ferments sugar, the agar is usually acidic.
