Anyone have tips on packing a balikbayan box?
This is my first attempt to send a 55 x 55 x 65 cm balikbayan box by sea. It will contain collector porcelain, stoneware, used clothes and 10 kilos worth of collector hardcover books. Can someone with experience in this sort of thing advice me on how to pack the plates and porcelain so they don't break in the 8 weeks in transit? Does it matter whether the books will be at the bottom or on top? Thanks!
The box will be sent through a private shipping company, not Philpost.
The balikbayan box is not strong enough to protect breakables.
I have tried to ship the China ceramic plates and they survived the shocks. I arranged them in a smaller hard box and placed cushion in between them. Then placed the small box inside the balikbayan box.
Collector porcelain may not survive if placed inside a balikbayan box. You should packed it in a wooden crate. You may place the crate later in the balikbayan box or ship the crate separately.
I also tried to ship an XO with a hard box with a wine glass in it. The XO bottle survived but the not the wine glass.
Hope it helps.

Putting the heavy objects at the bottom does not help. The cargo will be thrown or may be rolled over. The box has no standard "THIS SIDE UP" markings and the boxes will stacked over the other inside the container.
