Smelling Cup
Why does a cup of tea in London taste so bad?

I have just moved back up north from London. I am so happy to be able to enjoy delicious tea again, because in London a cup of tea always tastes terrible. For example, the water seems to stain, it smells weird and doesn't taste like 'tea' at all. This is all using the same tea bags and milk.

I know it is to do with the water, but I was wondering if anyone knew exactly why it tastes like this - what is in, or not in, the water to cause these effects?

Thanks!

It's all down to the water. The mains water in London comes off the London Clay and is heavily treated before it gets to the tap. Elsewhere in the Country the water can be anywhere from very soft to very hard. Use a water filter and this will help, but the local supply will determine the taste. Coffee does not seem to be affected to the same extent, wonder why ??
