Can you graft a japanese maple with a silver maple?
I have a sugar maple in my yard and i need to know if i can graft the jap. maple's branch to the cut of sugar maple, i know how to graft i just don't know if it will work, please help!!!
Yow - you are very ambitious! No, I do not think they are closely related enough and I do not hear about other people using silver maples as root stock for other trees at all - they are fast growers, but they are also fairly weak - they do not make a good base. I would never risk the expensive Japanese Maple in the procedure anyway - unless the Japanese Maple had been critically wounded in the root area, then I would have nothing to lose, since the Silver Maple is kind of a "space filler".
