When a guest is coming for a dinner, is it customary to serve the guest first before serving one's spouse?
Not sure if this only applies primarly to certain ethnic group, but I get into a situation where a guest is coming, and we are trying to be cordial by serving the guest (serving food to the guest's plate) first before serving my fiancee. That somehow makes the guest (a she) feels uncomfortable. Is it better left for the guest to serve herself?
If you have placed all the food on the table, in bowls/serving plates, the person closest to the guest should pass the bread basket to the guest and ask "would you like a roll (or bread..whatever it is)?" That way the guest knows that it's really the beginning of the meal (since some people say grace and some don't, as a guest, you aren't sure when to start).
If there is no bread on the table, use another dish and offer it to the guest. Let them take it from you and serve themselves.
If you are serving up the food in the kitchen, and taking hte food out to the table, give the first plate of food to the guest. They should (but don't always) wait until all the people at the table have their food.
