Can you fry food in a regular sauce pan?
I've never fried food before. I have what looks like an excellent recipe for fried ravioli (I know, it will stop my heart). I'm thinking about just heating some oil in a sauce pan, because I don't have a fryer. Is this a bad idea?
Make sure you get a good oil thermometer, and make sure you aren't filling your vessel more than halfway with oil. The thermometer is critical because the easiest way to screw up frying is to have oil that is too hot or too cold. And it's hard to overemphasize the size of your pan thing: if you don't leave enough space, adding food to the oil could cause it to spill over which could start a big fire and at the LEAST cause a very nasty mess and a lot of ruined food.
Oh and i'd start with something simpler like homemade French fries, to learn the technique of frying before moving on to something fancier like homemade fried ravioli.
