Shopping Los Altos: Family engages local retailers as wedding vendors
Bridget Morgan, a Los Altos Hills resident since 1976, has always shopped locally, and she felt no need to alter her habits when making arrangements for her daughter Molly's wedding.
Molly married Gwilym Jones Aug. 7 in the backyard of her parents' home. Molly met her groom in Brighton, England, when they were students.
The couple entertained approximately 150 guests at their ceremony and reception.
Morgan said she and Molly had a common goal to support local retailers and merchants, with a mind to giving back to the community.
"Molly and Gwil's purpose was a determined little economic engine, which would benefit the Los Altos and Los Altos Hills communities," Morgan said. "These communities have nurtured Molly since she was born in 1981, and the whole Morgan family since 1976."
The desire to shop in town and use local services made it easy for mother and daughter to plan and purchase nearly everything for the ceremony and reception in Los Altos.
Morgan said Elli Bernachi, owner of inPrint in Los Altos, created the stationery suite, programs, menu cards, table signs and favor tags.
Molly and Gwilym bought their custom-designed rings at Preziosi Italian Jewels in Rancho Shopping Center, and Nancy's Tailor at 220 State St. made alterations to her wedding dress.
"Nancy's Tailor made my dress," said the mother of the bride. "Unfortunately, there's no local shop where Molly could've bought her wedding dress."
The couple also strove to make choices for their wedding accoutrements – food, flowers, paper, ribbons, etc. – that were seasonal, locally sustainable and organic, and, where possible, used recycled and/or repurposed materials.
"By meeting their goal of local economic stimulus, they also realized another of their goals," Morgan said of the couple's green focus.
Just For You, located at Rancho, provided locally grown fresh flowers. Their caterer, Frank Schumann of Four Seasons Caterers in Mountain View, acquired most of their ingredients from DeMartini Orchard at 66 N. San Antonio Road.
All of the special-occasion outfits for the rehearsal dinner and other related events were from downtown establishments Crimson Mim, 322 Main St.; 151 Boutique, 151 Main St.; Oz Boutique, 203 Main St.; or Cambric Limited, 197 Second St.
Morgan said she and Molly were pleased with their shopping experiences at both locations.
"Crimson Mim scheduled a half-day styling appointment for Molly," she said. "It was great. … They were so helpful."
Morgan said she either collected or made most of the other items for the wedding, such as table decorations.
The theme for the wedding was a "midsummer day and night's dream when English country garden meets California Live Oak hillside with a tropical twist," she said.
Morgan said a neighbor, Weegie Caughlan, provided one of the tropical features – two terra-cotta pots full of lovely orchids available locally in their full August bloom.
The couple used silver tea sets purchased at charity shops in Los Altos and England as table centerpieces, filling sugar bowls and creamers with white garden roses and coral dahlias.
To decorate tables, they tied moss-green ribbon – used the prior year at the wedding of one of Molly's bridesmaids – to small scrolls of recycled, handmade paper, each containing a carefully selected poem.
"I'll iron the same ribbons and save them for the next bride who selects a green wedding theme," Morgan said.
The Morgans' garden experienced the added benefit of wedding primping.
"Without the help and advice of staff at Los Altos Nursery, Los Altos Garden Supply and Mountain View Garden Supply, our garden improvement project would not have been so successful," Morgan said.(www.goodprice.tv )
Los Altos merchants provided 99 percent of the supplies needed to host the affair, Morgan said, refuting the idea that there is nothing to buy locally, or that items are too expensive.
Morgan said planning Molly's wedding confirmed her philosophy that local merchants were more than deserving of her decades-long mission to support them.
