Can anyone give me a short summary of Robin Hood?
We're doing a project in Myths class, in which we have to write a script based on the story of Robin Hood. However, it would take too long to summarize the whole book, so we were looking for a short summary of the famous legend.
No, it's not like I'm asking you guys to do my homework. I have to write a script of the legend. I just needed a summary so that I could write the script. Nothing detailed and stuff.
Personally, I think it's refreshing that someone who needs help with their homework has openly admitted the fact - I think that deserves some recognition!
Now, the fact is that there IS no single 'story of Robin Hood'. It's not based on a book; rather, the written sources we do have are based on an oral tradition (stories spreading by word of mouth), and these were possibly based either on a real person, or on several people. The first known mention of Robin Hood we have comes from 1261, and the first proper stories are from the 1400s; the first actual books were written centuries later.
The Robin in the early tales bears little resemblance to the one we see in movies today: he doesn't rob the rich to give to the poor; he's not a Saxon rebel; he's not a dispossessed earl or knight; there's no Maid Marian; in fact, it's not at all clear what he *is*. Later tales invariably make Robin relevant to to the world of the author, rather than that of Robin, and that 'tradition' continues today (see the BBC 'Robin Hood' for a modern angsty emo sort of Robin with almost nothing Mediaeval about him at all). So summarising 'the' story clearly isn't going to work.
It might be possible to isolate certain aspects of the character which survive throughout the tradition, hinting at a core persona (fine bowman, good but fallible fighter, enemies with the Sheriff of Nottingham, and above all a very moral person - moral, that is, to the reader/audience, so his morality shifts throughout time as well). But that doesn't help you with your script.
So I would go in one of two directions, if I were you.
Direction 1:
Be as 'historical' as possible: read a little about the possible historical basis of the legend (see my sources), and base your script on the earliest tales we have. These can be found in their original form at the University of Rochester link - they're in Middle English (an old form of English spoken from roughly 1066-1500), but don't let that put you off! Read them as though the author couldn't spell and you'll quickly tune in.
Probably one of the most important early tales was "A Lytell Geste of Robyn Hode" ('geste' or 'gest' means 'tales of the deeds of a person' rather than 'jest'). Many later stories are indirectly based on this one, and it contains several events (Wiki article with synopsis is also listed under sources). If you choose this option, I'd probably go with the Gest - but have a look also at some of the other important early stories, especially "Robin Hood and the Monk", "Robin Hood and Guy of Gisborne" and "Robin Hood His Death".
Direction 2:
Find a modern collection of Robin Hood stories and summarise that. There is no definitive modern version of the tales - all authors pick the bits they like, and make up the rest. One very important version was written by Sir Walter Scott in "Ivanhoe", although Robin is just one character in it, rather than the protagonist. I think your best bet, though, would be Howard Pyle's "Merry Adventures of Robin Hood": it's based very strongly on some of the eaqrly tales, but is recognisable to we moderners as 'our' Robin. Again, see sources for a summary.
Which direction you take is obviously your choice; personally, I'd pick the historical approach, but honestly, that way lies more work. If you're just after a very basic summary of the modern version of the legend, go with Pyle.
