When to use blues scale in chord progressions?
Ok so if i'm supposed to go to a aeolian mode when the chord progression is based around the sixth chord in the key, then which scale degrees sound best with a blues scale?
As a blues artist, I can tell you to drop the mode thinking and think in terms of chords. That is, what chord are you playing over and what notes are in that chord. Then, look at your blues scale (the one that is in the key you are playing) and emphasize (or hint at) the notes in the chord (as well as any additional notes that aren't in the scale but are in the chord). Doing this will make your playing more melodic and vocal-sounding. Don't always do this -- sometimes, simple melodies/licks in the pentatonic blues work just fine, no matter where you are at in the progression.
Note -- Playing in modes will make you sound like you are -- well, playing in modes. That's not blues. You should be playing melodies -- i.e., using your guitar as a vocalist. Modes can give you some ideas but you shouldn't use them as a crutch. When it comes down to it, you have to use your ear.
