Outdoor Garden Planters
Outdoor garden planters address the need for plants in limited spaces. While taking care of plants in planters can be more time consuming, by careful planning you can actually have healthy, happy plants with far less overall work then you might have with ground plantings. Using garden planters is an easy way to liven up a patio, enhance a small deck, bring the outdoors inside, and even grow delicate plants that might not survive year round in your area. There are a lot of different types of outdoor garden planters out there, and each type is best for a certain type of use. Although I suggest some additional research into this, here are a few basic suggestions.
Garden planters made of resin are popular. These plastic molded planters come in a wide array of styles, colors, sizes, and uses. Typically this type of outdoor garden planter is low maintenance, durable, and lightweight. These are wonderful for larger pots required for planting trees and shrubs that one might want to keep in a container. Another use is a mass planting garden like the square foot style that is dense and tiered with taller plants in the middle and shorter ones on the edge. Try doing a trellis with beans or peas in the middle, various herbs on the edges and medium sized vegetables in the middle for a great garden suitable for small spaces. Because the pots are lightweight you can move them easily as needed, so bringing that lemon tree to shelter it from heavy frost is quite possible, if you plant it in a resin pot. Consider using a heavy duty trivet with wheels for such delicate plants to make moving them even easier.
Stone outdoor garden planters are wonderful for a more antique feel to a garden space. This is typically a dry cast sandstone and concrete blend. These heavy garden planters suit more permanent placements as they are extremely difficult to move once filled with plants and soil. However, they can be very good for large plantings and can be constructed like raised beds, which gives a lot of advantages over planting in the ground. Garden planters also come in straight concrete. Like the stone versions these are very heavy and should be used for more permanent types of plantings. Since these cannot be brought inside, you will need to mulch or pad the roots to protect from heavy frost, freezing, or high rains.
Pottery of course is traditionally made of clay, and garden planters are no exception. Clay containers have superior water holding abilities then other pots. While heavy, clay pots work very well for indoor to outdoor garden planter use for those plants that must spend the winter indoors. Because these retain water well they work for smaller plantings that might dry out too much in other mediums. Make sure before you use or reuse clay planters that you sterilize the container to prevent the spread of disease. Use soapy water and bleach for this.
