How stable is the tectonic plate in the northeast of the USA as compared to the plate near california?
I was wondering which of the plates(east/west) are the most stable. Forget the superman movie and ottis's plan for otisville which would have been a little itty bitty place is all mr. luther" Sorry couldn't resist. But seriously If anyone can give me a good short answer It will help solve a longstanding debate with me and my friend. and thanks for the help.
There will always be faults, and the US Northeast is surprisingly complicated, due to a complex geologic history. However, the East Coast is a passive margin, thousands of miles from any major tectonic boundary (in this case, the Mid-Atlantic Ridge). All it does (as a generality) is keep drifting away. Look at a map of earth with the oceans removed, and you'll see the gentle, long slope of the continental shelf, the dropping continental margin, and the fairly quiet and extensive distance to the MAR. Yes, earthquakes happen, but compared to other places, it's very boring.
Out here on the West Coast, where I live, is an active margin. The huge transform fault of the San Andreas, separating the Pacific plate from the North American plate, from the Gulf of California and up past San Francisco. The Farallon plate was subducted millions of years ago, but it's still close enough to the surface that it causes earthquakes and, theoretically, produce new volcanic mountains. The Juan de Fuca plate off of Washington state and northern Oregon is a highly active subduction zone of deep focus earthquakes and volcanic mechanisms that continue to feed and create the volcanoes of the Cascade Mountains. We really shake and roll out here. Much as the people of the West are more interesting than the people of the East, so go the geologic boundaries.
Okay, maybe I don't mean that insult too much about the people, but I'm from southern California, and my wife is from Pennsylvania, and it's a continuing source of amusement... especially trying to decide if she's Pennsylvania, and I'm California, where is our girls' geographic center?
All kidding aside, yes, the west is far more active than the east by many orders of magnitude.
