Why is it called "charger" for dinnerware?
I was at a dinner friday where there was a big plate underneath the plate you eat your food. I was told the big plate under the regular plate is called a "Charger". I want to know why it is called that.
Think of the charger or (service plate as I know it) -- the large plate underneath the dinner plate or napkin -- as a purely aesthetic dish that keeps spills off the tablecloth during the soup, salad and main courses. It is not a big bread plate. Do not eat off of it. In traditional fine dining, your waiter carries the plate away with the dishes from your first course. Or, plates and bowls for each course are set on top of the charger, and it is removed at the end of the meal, before dessert.
Well I know what its for and how to use it. But for the life of me I have never heard it called a charger plate. If you did not put in your question that it is a plate under your other plate I would have never knowen what you were talking about. You made me think and I looked it up and I could not find why it is called that except that name has been around from the 1800's.
