Wheres a good place to set up a mutual fund in Canada?
I was thinking possibly Edward Jones, I think they told me that I could invest as little as $25 a month (which is reasonable since I'm a student).
Any advice would be appreciated.
Check with the big investment houses like TRowe Price and Fidelity. They normally will only do that if you set up to have that amount withdrawn and transferred to your mutual fund monthly. Make sure to stay with no-load funds with no back end fees and keep managerial exp and fees below 2%. Otherwise you will be playing catch up before you begin with all your initial investments being ate up with fees. All this information and more ca be found on Morningstar.com they have listings of all mutual fund companies, their funds and minimums. Make sure to check individual funds not the fund house because you will get an average min. for all funds they carry instead of actual min. Some do have special arrangements for students or for investing in a retirement account. This information may only be available from the actual firms site so if you find some companies or funds you are interested in then go to their site. Buy directly from the fund provider to save on fees too. Also check the ex-dividend date, with it getting late in the year (mutual funds pay these normally in December). You may want to get these set up to start the day after that date because the share price will decrease due to the dividend payout allowing you to get in at a better price. Another idea to look into are ETF's which you buy like a stock but are more like a mutual fund but with less fees. These can also be reasearched at Morningstar, but you would need to open a brokerage account. This can be cost effectively done with most of the online brokerage house with Scottrade I believe still having the lowest commission. I am not sure about minimums to open an account but just thought I'd offer another option for you.
