How to make a furniture store more successful?
What should be the target market for a furniture store or should there be one? Would that make the business more successful? And what should businesses do about a lot of people who come in due to advertisements but don't purchase anything?
I believe your target market would range from young couples buying for an apartment or new home, to homeowners looking to upgrade/update.
Offer a nice selection of furniture (contemporary seems to be big these days ) and the extras. Do you also sell area rugs, lamps, and other home decor? There are lots of suppliers out there that sell beautiful home decor, and these items are also good sellers. Selling a wide selection of items will help make your business more successful, as it will also attract different types of customers to your business. Say you decide to order in a beautiful selection of candles, vases, and wall decor. You advertise. You'll attract a wide range of customers - those looking for decor, and those looking for furniture. It'll bring more people to your store. Plus the word will get out that you offer lots of home improvement ideas. Try picking up a nice bathroom line, that sells funky and fashionable shower curtains, towels, mats, etc.
There are lots of things you could do! Do you offer financing to your customers? If you don't, I think you should look into it. A lot of people want to buy but don't have the lump sum to pay for it. Monthly, no interest or low interest payments are a good idea. And your prices are also important. Make sure you don't overprice your items. Take into consideration the cost of shipping, etc. Make sure you get your money back plus extra, but don't make too huge a markup. (Example - candle holder costs $4.50 wholesale, you price it at $19.99. A better price would be $11.99. You still double your cost and make back your shipping costs).
