Can I put a lid on a betta fish bowl?
I bought a little plastic fish bowl from Petco, and also bought a betta fish. I found a lid from one of my plastic storage containers that fits the fish bowl perfectly. I prefer to keep it on (the lid) because my cat wants to drink from the bowl, which I discourage. I worry about whether the fish needs an open lid for air or oxygen. I do not have a filtration system. It;s just a bowl of water (which I conditioned with something I bought at Petco). Thanks.
Sure, but don't seal it. Betta's, unlike other fish, don't use gill to get oxygen - but they come to the surface to breathe air, then they go back down until the next breath is needed. Keeping a lid over the bowl will keep the moist air there and that is good.
What is not good, is using a bowl as a permanent living space. Though the betta breathes air and doesn't need the amount a larger tank would have - it does need some 'elbow' room. Those bowls are convenient only for the stores selling them, they should not be their permanent space.
Another thing that's not good, a Betta is a tropical fish, meaning warm water. About 75 to 80 degrees warm. They can survive at 70 or below but will be suffering from that cold water, and won't live long that way. If you live in a warm climate, you won't need a heater. But even Florida in the winter gets colder than that.
Try to get a larger tank - such as those 2.5 gal betta display tanks with a light and heater.
