what is the difference between italian languages of renaissance Italy and modern italy?

Hi... I'm writing an article about Italy and I want to make sure that I write accurate scriptures. So is there a difference? If possible... please provide some Italian traditions, it will help me with my article.

1) At Renaissance time Italian language didn't exist. Several neo-latin dialects were spoken in the different regions. Among the others, Florence's dialect had already become the best known. It was known among high-class people of every region.
2) All those dialects differed a lot from modern Italian in words and expressions. If we italians read an ancient book we have some problems to understand everything.
