Make Your Boat Gelcoat Look Great!
Fiberglass boats with proper maintenance on your Gelcoat finish can keep that mirror like new luster for many, many years. There is no big deal about it, and your Boat/Yacht will stand out in the harbor always. There are so many products out there, but like everyone else, you stick with what works for you. Even after a decade, your hull can still have a mirror-like finish and always look like new.
At Springtime when you unwrap your boat, wash the boat down thoroughly several times with a good marine product. All that grime, soot from the air, and other contaminates saturate your boats finish, getting into the pores of your gelcoat, giving it that dull worn-out look. You have to wash her down with a vengeance to work out that grime and soot that has been laying there for months. After that good washing, wash her again and you might see some wax from last year....That's telling you, you've done a good job! The next step is to make up a potion (at least I call it that) to smooth out your Gelcoat (microscopically) and also to get out those tougher stains or blemishes. This soupy mix actually cleans and smoothes the gelcoat without really removing the gelcoat as general compounding does. You want to keep that deep lustrous look. Notice this makes the whole hull look uniform and later when applying the wax, it will have the same uniform luster all over the hull.
Next, try using the "Light White Polishing Compound", but not the way you think....You can use regular compound also...but just read a little further. Take abunch of the compound and put it into a pail and add water to it for a soupy mix. For boats that need more attention, you make the mix with a little less water. For better hulls that mix is pretty watery. Use a large and thick sponge, stirring it in the mix to keep the compound floating evenly in the mixture regularly (the compound likes to settle to the bottom) and apply it to the hull in small circular motions to get everything. Do a section of the hull at a time...two, three, four feet at a time in length, (keeping the sponge stirring in the mixture often as you use it) then move on to the next section. Whenyou get done with the second section, go back over the prior section you've done (should be hazy....a little dry), doing those circular motions once again. When that's done, the other section ahead of itshould behazing now...so do that one also again. Going over it the second time makes the sponge brag a little which is good (more drag for heavier applications)...keep putting the sponge into the mixture (stirring as you do it) so the sponge doesn't dry out. When those two sections are done and a bit hazy, take a hose and another big clean wet sponge and go over what you've done keeping the water flowing over the area your sponge is cleaning off. Use a straight back and forth motion, (left to right) it helps keep that uniform look. Do a good job cleaning it off. You'll be amazed at the difference, but not only that, the uniformity of it all. Itlooks Great!
Now the secret is to really wash the hull thoroughly....with soap and water a few times. Otherwise the wax you put on will not stay on for long...wax does not stick to compound. So get those nooks also and wash, wash, wash! This ensures that there will be no compound grit or residue left on the hull, and your wax will protectas it should and last a long time! You want to wax what you have done the same day, so don't do what you can't wax in the same day... you don't want contaminates from overnight to get on the bare hull. Do the waxing by hand,or use amachine. Todays' machinesare not too aggressive where you can do damage to the hull. Just be nice and easy.Putting another coat of wax on in mid season really makes a difference if you can,but that's up to you. I forgot one thing.... Bring along a pair of Sunglasses...Your Hull will really shine!
