Question about regionally accredited schools?
Hey there
I am currently in the US Military deployed to Iraq. After seeing some people already knock off some classes at AMU (American Military University), I have decided to start taking classes.
Now the college says it is regionally accredited by the HLC of North Central Association of Colleges and Schools and nationally accredited by Accrediting Commission of the Distance Education and Training Council.
I honestly do not know what that means as far as transferring credits to other colleges. Say I want to go to school back in my home state of Virginia to a school like Virginia Tech or something. Will they accept those credits?
Thanks for any help
Regional accreditation is the only accreditation that really means anything. So if it's accredited by the NCA great! Many unis will accept the credits you have earned.
There are some things for you to know. Not all schools will accept any transfer credits (Ivy's feel that way as do a few other schools). Of those that do accept credit most will cap out a 60 hours or so.
Not all classes will transfer at a school that excepts transfer credits. If you take Asian Military History and your new school doesn't offer that course then no credit will be awarded. Basically a school can only give credit for courses that they offer. So stick to common, mainstream courses like calculus, american history, logic, english 101, etc. Those are the kinds of courses that are most likely transferable. If you aren't sure about a class you want to take look at the course catalog of UVA , Va. Tech., and a couple other schools you might be interested in. If each of the schools you look at have a similar course, then it is likely that the course would transfer at many schools.
I know nothing of AMU. But I'm always a little suspicious of online coursework at an institution that doesn't have a physical presence (i.e. a campus of renown). The reason is some of these programs aren't very rigorous. University of Phoenix is the poster child for this type of weak program. So be careful out there.
P.S. Thanks for fighting for my freedom and protecting my rights to be an educated, independent woman who can choose her own destiny.
