Perspiration,etc.wore some of the gold plating on my flute's lip plate.What can I use to remove the remainder?

I don't want to use something so caustic that it will damage the rest of my musical instrument. Thanks!

This can easily be buffed off - it is only a VERY thin wash of gold, and legally cannot even be called *gold plated*. It is there to protect SOME people from contact dermatitis - a reaction they have with other metals, since gold is so non-reactive. So - the metal underneath *might* case you to get a rash, or a black mark on your chin. Easiest fix is either to paint it with clear nail polish, or get some Yamaha lip papers (www.fluteworld.com) and cover it up. I play a LOT of outdoor gigs in the summer, and the humidity makes us slip - so I use these, as well as some I custom-cut myself. Easy.
