Famous People and their PAWpular Dogs Part 1: The Presidential Dogs
There are a lot of famous people from various fields and industries. But behind the success of these politicians, actors, musicians, and celebrities are their loyal four-pawed friends who have also become paw-pular themselves. The first part of this Famous People and their Pawpular Dogs features the Presidential Pets.
Most of the US presidents had their furry friends who also lived with them in the White House and have joined them in their family portraits. Most of them have also tasted the limelight by being photographed a hundred or a thousand times.
George Washington, the first president was a fan of hounds. He had 3 American Staghounds which he named Sweetlips, Scentwell and Vulcan. He also had Drunkard, Taster, Tipler and Tipsy which were Black and Tan Coonhounds. John Adams was also reported to have dogs but the breeds were not specified. His choice of name for one of his dogs is somehow mind-boggling. He named one Satan while the others were Juno and Mark. Thomas Jefferson had two Briards, a large dog from the herding breed. One was called Buzzy and the other's name is not known.
John Tyler had an Italian Greyhound but with French name. He called it Le Beau. Franklin Pierce was reported to have had seven miniature Oriental dogs. James Buchanan had a big and a toy pooch. He had Lara a Newfoundland and Punch, a toy terrier. Abe Lincoln's dogs were called Fido and Jip. Ulysses Grant also had a Newfoundland called Faithful and another pet named Rosie.
Rutherford Hayes might have been a real dog lover for he had eight different dogs. They were Dot, a cocker spaniel; Hector, a Newfoundland; Duke, an English Mastiff; Grim, a greyhound; Otis, a Miniature Schnauzer; Juno and Shep, his hunting dogs; and another pet named Jet.
James Garfield's furry friend was called Veto. Grover Cleveland had a Japanese poodle named Hector. Benjamin Harrison also had one paw mate, a Collie named Dash. Theodor Roosevelt had the longest list of pets. Among them were Terriers. Pete (Bull Terrier), Skip (Rat Terrier), Jack & Peter, and Blackjack (Manchester Terrier). He also had Manchu (Pekingese), Rollo (St. Bernard) and Sailor Boy (Chesapeake Bay Retriever).
William Howard Taft had a pet named Caruso. Woodrow Wilson had three Davie (Airedale Terrier), Mountain Boy (Greyhound) and Bruce (Bull Terrier). Warren G. Harding had two dogs Laddie Boy (Airedale Terrier) and Old Boy, a bulldog.
There's still a long list of presidents ahead and some of them had a lot of pooches which you'll meet on the continuation of this article. This list is just a proof that the former US presidents were also big pet lovers. Even the leaders of the nation also did petsafe ways to care for their pooches.
To be continued....
