Visit the beautiful Parc Floral de Haute Bretagne with its 21 themed gardens
Near to the beautiful medieval town of Fougeres is a 25 hectare park which has been transformed into a series of 21 themed gardens. There is a wonderful range of garden styles in the park and lots of inspiration. This is a wonderful garden to visit in Brittany.
Near the entrance is a long rectangular pond whose edges have been densely packed in a style evocative of the Arabian Nights after which it has been named. The long pond has a series of fountains adding to the beauty of the garden.
Continue into an area which was once a potager but whose box-lined squares have now been planted with an eye to colour rather than vegetables - a very attractive transformation. Sage and golden oregano have been used en-masse to give this garden a wonderful golden glow. When I get home I intend to promote these from my herb garden to my borders to give some welcome summer colour when there is often a lull between the more colourful periods of spring and autumn.
The Japanese garden has to be one of the most successful in the park and the glorious mass of Acers, cloud-pruned trees, hostas, rhododendrons and azaleas is stunning - especially worth a visit in the spring to see the rhododendrons and azaleas in flower.
Being a lover of blue flowers the blue garden was one of my favourites. Set on the edge of the lake the blue of the water set off the blue flowers perfectly. Plants here included agapanthus, perovskia, hydrangeas, buddleias and eucalyptus.
The garden even caters for children with a rope bridge set above the lushly planted ‘poets garden’, three labyrinths and a small garden filled with carnivorous plants.
The park is set in the grounds of the Chateau de la Foltiere at Le Chatellier, 10 km North West of Fougeres in the Ille et Vilaine department of Brittany. The garden has been classified as one of the ‘Jardin Remarquable’ of France.
