Is an African gray bird considered an exotic bird?
I'm considering a new bird for a pet. I was going to consider a canary, but I'm also considering an African gray. My landlord says I can't have an exotic bird, but heard about the African gray of being the most intelligent of the bird species. I'd like to get one.
An exotic animal is any non-domesticated animal that is living outside of their native environment.
An African Grey would be considered an "exotic" everywhere - except in Africa.
Cockatiels and cockatoos are native to Australia. In any other place - they are considered exotic.
It sounds like your landlord does not allow birds. And it's perfectly understandable if you are living in an apartment situation. Along with being destructive, birds can be extremely loud, which is disruptive, and inconsiderate to neighbors.
African Greys live for a very long time, in fact - it may outlive you. They are also sensitive animals who cannot tolerate being moved from owner to owner. Don't even consider getting one unless you are willing to make a lifetime commitment. That means always choosing a residence which permits them.
My advice: save your money. Buy your own home. And if after that, you can afford all of the expenses associated with owning a Grey - including all vet care - then by all means - get a bird.
