How to I add food-safe decals to vintage dinnerware?
What type of decal paper do I order? I would like to add to antique floral dinner plates. I want to use them though!!! I don't mind handwashing...but don't want to kill my guests. Do I have to kiln-fire? Thanks!
I think you can use any water-slide decal paper so long as you seal it properly and that's the trick.
The decals are not so much the problem as the sealant you will need to use to make them waterproof. I know of no acrylic sealants that will be truly food safe. DickBlick.com makes an epoxy based clear liquid sealant that will work, but it cannot be painted or sprayed on; it has to be poured on and then allowed to set for hours, during which time, if it's not in a concave space, it will keep spreading and dripping. So it will only work for a limited type of application. But at least it's something. It's called EnviroTex Lite Pour-On High Gloss Finish. If you used it on the bottom of a plate to protect and seal a decal, then it would be food safe, and though EnviroTex says it is also dishwasher safe, I disagree. It flakes off in a few washings.
I hope that helps.
