Why is the volume of a coffee pot "cup" equal to 5 oz. (150mL)?
A true "cup" is equal to 8 oz.
the average coffee mug is usually closer to 10 oz.
teacups are about 6 oz.
and demitasse cups (the itty bitty cups used for espresso) are 2-3 oz.
So, why do coffee pots measure their cups as 5 oz? What is the origin of this convention?
That is because they leave room for cream and sugar.
