Coffee Cup

Which math do I have to study to not be able to tell the difference between a coffee cup and a doughnut?
I've heard math jokes about how after you study a certain type of topology you can't tell the difference between a coffee cup and a doughnut. What? Is there any super-simplified explanation for this, and if not will simple course in topography answer my question?
I'm not an expert in topology, but I pretty sure that two surfaces that can be transformed into one another by bending and stretching (no breaking or cutting) are considered topologically equivalent. A doughnut is topologically equivalent to a coffee cup, and thus comes the joke.
