The French attack in Champagne has since been described as "the unlimited method"-----i.e., the armies were hurled on to advance as far as they could "into the blue," in the confident expectation that they would carry not only the front systems, which had been subjected to bombardment, but all intact positions and defences likely to be met with in rear.

"Into the blue" is a British expression meaning "into the unknown or far distance*." "In rear" no doubt refers to the area behind (in the rear of) where the army is fighting. Therefore, the last part of this long, difficult sentence means that the French could army could not only advance successfully, but also keep enemy attacks on the rear from doing much damage to the French army.
