Wild Swans helpful when studying AS Modern History (China,1900-49)?
I'm in my first year of Sixth Form and am studying Modern History. The topic we are currently studying is "Crises, Tensions and Political Divisions in China, 1900-49" which is part of the Edexcel AS course. I'm keen to do some extra reading in to the subject as I find the course interesting and also hope to continue with History next year and perhaps at Uni'. So if anyone knows whether 'Wild Swans' is useful when studying this era in Chinese History or if there are any books that relate better to this topic, to ensure a fuller understanding, It'd be much appreciated. ![]()
Also, is there anyone who's already done the course, some pointers would be great!
While I have not taken the course, I have read "Wild Swans." I would say that after reading Jung Chang's book(s), there would be no harm in reading Han Suyin's books ("The Crippled Tree" & "The Mortal Flower") either. I find the comment below helpful in understanding Jung Chang's motvies for writing:
"I am from the same province as the author and also lived through the Cultural Revolution. Westerners might have heard only about the Red Guards, however all Party members, including those who later became victims, were participants in the movement (and other movements before the Cultural Revolution). I can understand why the author chose to portray her parents as purely victims or even heroes against the Revolution -- after all, we Chinese have thousands of years of tradition "avoiding anything that may compromise the name of an intimate." In reality, it was simply impossible for a Party cadre like the author's parents not to be an active participant in the movements, until they themselves become victimized. To me this was the true tragedy for us Chinese."
