What are students like in China, Germany, India, countries other than the UK?
are there bullies like in the US and UK?
I'm not writing a paper or doing anything else as constructive, just curious 
. I'm dismayed that our American culture has always allowed children to be so unkind to each other.
I studied at the university level in China and have taught 11-13 year old Chinese students in Ningbo and Yangzhou and found the students quite delightful. These students were very motivated to learn - whether it is from internal desire or parental/societal pressure – who knows why. Depending on the school, some classes were very formal – students did not speak unless called upon and stood up next to their desks when responding. In a less formal situation, they laughed easily, chattered between themselves (very modestly – not long conversations).
It seemed to me the first school was very much like the university classes I attended 20 years earlier. Little emphasis on independent thinking – if they wanted us to have an opinion, they’d tell us what it was. The second school was trying to instill creative thinking – more westernized teaching style.
Still, I found Chinese classrooms very bare – walls empty – just a chalkboard. I brought posters with me and pasted them all over the walls. The kids thought they had the best classroom in the school! I let each child select a poster at the end of the term – and the teachers, too. they were as valuable as gold – and I’m sure are still on the wall at home.
The last classroom I had, still had bare walls – but my lessons were projected by power point on the computer. When they worked on their lessons quietly, I could check out my home town newspaper. Yet, when it came to arts & crafts a glue gun was new and innovative.
I taught English – and most of the students were very well versed in the basics – but they were learning from language teachers who learned their English from books & tapes. The students certainly knew no common language – or the alternative uses of language – and their pronunciations were often still reflecting a clipped British accent. Now they use pocket sized translating mini computers to look up words while the teacher speaks. It is pretty cool – but they got some pretty weird words out of it. I’m not sure it is helps or not.
I'm sure there are bullies - they are everywhere - but it did not show up in my classrooms, on the playgrounds or at mealtimes. Punishment would have been very severe - it could have already been addressed.
