Bamboo design china marked "Hand Painted Mede (Misspelled as written on s) in Japan." Set over 100 years old.
The hand painting is bamboo with leaves in black and gray. Also has kidney-shapped plates with room for cup. Trimmed in Silver. Has been in the family for over 100 years. The spellind of "Made" is misspelled "Mede" in Japan. I believe it is a krumpet and tea set - service for 4 - with a teapot and sugar and creamer.
I would doubt the set is more than 100 years old. Prior to WWII, items made in Japan said "Nippon," at if it truly was 100 years old, it would NOT say Japan. It wasn't until WWII that items coming out of Japan were required to put the English word "Japan" on items. Shortly after WWII it was "Made in Occupied Japan," and then in the 50s, Made in Japan.

Do you trust products made in China?
Are Chinese products worth moving our businesses overseas? We've had lead in baby toys, melamine in pet food and now melamine in powdered milk products (baby formula and creamer etc), along with adding saw dust like wood chips to food to add weight to food products so they can spread out their productions more and make more money. What's your take?

Yes it has, but it doesn't mean that they don't still use a lot of shortcuts in their products. China doesn't have good standards and sometimes they don't have standards at all. I'm surprised people really aren't concerned about it since the baby formula does deal with their own children.
Just to add randomly, parts of China do eat dogs and cats. They are kept like chickens in a chicken coop and slaughtered as ordered.

considering the thousands of products/processes that are being done in China, they don't have a bad record with all things considered. What I find interesting is the parallels between China and Japan, during the 1950's. I used to be "made in Japan," was the global catch-phrase. This was because several countries were involved in nation-building for Japan after WW II. With their state of affairs, it was extrememly profitable to move jobs and assembly and processes to Japan because of the cheap labor. The same thing is happening now in China. However, just like Japan, such activity will, in the long run, contribute to inflation and a rise in salaries, standard of living, etc. Eventually, China will have to be replaced with another country/area where labor is cheap and the entire cycle will begin anew. On a macro scale, this is good because it elevates the country/region to a higher level and standard of living. Economies in other parts of the world benefit from lower prices due to lower prduction costs. the same can be said of Mexican laborers that come into the US to work. We have a minimum wage. Illegal aliens don't get minimum wage and they are willing to work for far less. (But this is another story)
The deficient products from China are the reslut of either greed or incompetence. I suspect greed and deceit. Just goes to show that capitalism exists in a communist state, just like it did in the former Soviet Union. People like money for the things it can buy!
In the USSR, it was the black-market (Samuel Adam's invisible hand, according to economics theory).
It's going to be up to the Chinese government to issue and maintain and enforce standards that protect people, both at home and abroad from acts such as the tainted milk. The same things happen in the US, the UK, Europe and other developed parts of the world---as well as the under-developed parts of the world. It will have to worked through, just like all the countless times it has occurred in other parts of the world throughout history.
good question!
