Hosting a foreign exchange student from China~what all should i know?
Hey guys,
My family and i are going to host a 16 year old foreign exchange student from China. She will be staying with us for a year. However, My family doesn't know a whole bunch about the Chinese culture....we have covered the basics in school but that is about it. We were wondering exactly what could we expect? Do they have the same eating habits? What are their mannerisms like? Things like that would be great to know so anything is helpful.
Muchas Gracias!
She'll be pretty open to learning from you.
First things first, though, find out where she's from (what city/village/hamlet) and what her background is. Is this a cultural exchange program or an academic program? Is she from the City or the country? Is her family wealthy, or poor? This will determine A LOT about how she will interact with you. I"m going to surmise that her family is fairly wealthy as it is very nigh impossible for poor folks to be involved in an exchange program. I'd also surmise that she's from the city as exchange programs are very uncommon in rural areas. Remember, there are no suburbs in China (demographically, think the US pre WWII). But again, I would really find out from the program admins what her background is. If she's from a wealthier family, she will have been exposed to a lot of things and may have also traveled out of the country before, so the only new experience will actually be LIVING in the US instead of just travelling to visit.
She'll most likely be very shy, but obviously she's adventurous enough since she's going to live out of the country. Direct eye contact is going to be rare. Arguments and confrontation is going to be almost non-existent, even if you've offended her. Asian cultures play down confrontation. Unless of course, she's a spoiled brat. If that's the case, you may get arguments (remember she's most likely an only child- little empress). More often than not though, she will be very accommodating. And you won't be able to get many direct answers out of her. You'll get a lot of "anything is fine" answers.
She may be extremely naive when it comes to boys and dating. You may want to help her out with that. Kids in China are amazed by the fact that 14, 15, 16 year olds in the US have "girlfriends" or "Boyfriends". Casual dating is a rather foreign concept and hasn't been embraced until recently. Sex is a very touchy and embarrassing subject.
Expect her to suffer from homesickness. Taking her to a place where she can interact with Chinese people will help. Chinese restaurants will help as well.
You and she will harbor some preconceived notions about each other's culture so be prepared to be surprised when those notions are proven wrong or challenged. Remember, just because it's different doesn't mean it's necessarily wrong.
Food is probably going to be the hardest thing for her to adjust to. Her experience with Western food can possibly limited to KFC, McDonald's, and Pizza Hut. BUt, it may not. Again, it depends on how wealthy her family is or how much she's travelled in the past. Ask her if she knows how to cook (most kids DO NOT). If she does, give her free reign of the kitchen and take her out to buy ingredients. If she's hankering for a taste of home, at least she has the option to make it.
If she's into fashion, clothing, makeup, etc., which I suspect she may no be (In China- good students do not follow the latest trends), then she'll fit right in. She'll know about all kinds of high fashion brands. Expect her to know more European brands rather than big names in the US. She may also find that Western makeup products and hair products sometimes react differently to Asian skin. So she may try to look for Asian specific products. You don't have to stress out about finding these products. Just saying that she might be looking for these. She may not know how to match colors, may not wear deodorant and may not have her ears pierced. Again, this is more of a culture thing. Try not to think of it as "weird" as #1. many mainlanders like to wear whatever colors they like. #2. Deodorant is very hard to find in China unless it's in a big dept. store and it's pretty expensive. #3. Young ladies with pierced ears are immediately marked as girls who do not have good study habits.
She may not like tanning, so if you go to the beach, you may find that she'll only want to wear a one piece (and no shaving of the armpits and legs) and sit under an umbrella the whole time. Again, I'm only describing typical behavior and there are ALWAYS exceptions.
She probably won't be into working out and will probably be pretty bad at sports. Physical activity is not a focus of the Chinese education system/culture. It's all about book smarts. Unless she's super talented, there are not "high school" teams she can play on. If she's a talented ball player, she would have been plucked out of school and placed into one of the national training center type schools.
Hopefully this will give you a bit of insight into what to expect. I cannot stress enough that I've only described "typical" behavior and that your visitor may be the polar opposite. The key thing is this, keep an open mind. She's there to learn from you and you're there to learn from her.
