Is it veterans week/month in the UK?
I've noticed at lot of British news anchors wearing poppies on their lapels, is it veterans week/month in the UK? I know it is longer then a day because I've been seeing it all week so far.
It's not longer than a day. Remembrance day is normally the Sunday nearest to 11th November. We have a 2-minute silence at 11am on 11th November, and also at 11am on Remembrance Sunday (if the 11th falls on a Sunday, then it's all put into the one day).
On the Sunday they televise the presenting of the poppy wreaths at a commemorative statue outside Downing Street in London, to commemorate those who lost their lives in the wars. The televised event is normally a couple of hours long, with interviews with veterans etc. The queen/prince or whoever will also show up, say a few words, speak to the veterans etc.
The poppies are a mark of Remembrance day, and they go on sale at the beginning of the November. The newsreaders and TV presenters are asked to wear them on their lapels for the two weeks leading up to Remembrance day, partly to show their support, but also to encourage and remind the public to buy them and help the cause. I think the money raised goes towards helping the veterans, but also to help the families of those who have died in recent wars (eg Afganistan).
