Can I transfer a 15 ft blue spruce?
I have a blue spruce that is growing in my front yard that I would like to transfer to my backyard. Can I do this without killing the tree?
Yes, you can move it. But, get the advice of a professional first. It may pay to have them do it for you. First, a 15' tree will have a large root system. It will be very heavy and awkward to manage without the proper equipment. If you do decide to move it yourself, water it well two days before digging. Never let the roots dry out while you are moving it. In other words, have a large hole ready to put it in. Dig that hole, water it well and then go dig up the tree, set the transplant down in the hole, fill with dirt and water again. I have moved evergreens before they begin spring growth, about the end of February. They are best transplanted before new growth starts, or very late fall after all new growth has occurred. After you transplant an evergreen, water it with a bucket of water at least once a week while it's getting established.
