How Do you hand pollinate Blue Berry flowers?
Hi I have a South Moon Blue Berry bush that is self pollinating but i have always have had problems with the lack of honey bees in my yard to pollinate my other trees like avocado exc and i believe i will have the same problem with the blue berry cause i bought it from the store last july...does any one know any tips how to pollinate blue berry flowers by hand?
If the bush was sold to you as self pollinating then the wind should do the pollinating. If there is not much wind where it is then a shake or 2 when it's in flower will do the pollinating for you.
If you want to hand pollinate anything first you have to know the sex organs of a flower. They are in the center of a flower. The male organ is the stamen. It is usually the tallest and it has a powdery like substance on it. That is the pollen. The smaller tubes in the center are the female organs called the pistols. A bee comes along looking for nectar and in the process collects pollen on his legs. Then he flies to the next flower and some of the pollen comes off of his legs. If it falls into the pistol then fertilization takes place.
If you are hand pollinating then you and a Q-tip take the place of the bee.
