It would be helpful for you to suggest what years you consider "vintage". Depending on who's using the word, it could mean anything from last year, back about 30,000 years!
I'll assume you're talking about 1945-1955. Almost all clothing was made from the 'natural' fibres: wool, cotton, linen, and silk. The fibres were used to make fabrics very similar to the fibres sold today. Rayon (re-formed cellulose) was the first 'man-made' fibre, and valued for its silky texture. It was fragile, and creased and shrank easily. Nylon was very new: it had been used for parachutes during World War II. Most women wore "lisle" stockings (made from cotton) or silk (scarce, expensive, and fragile). Nylon stockings ('nylons') were a great luxury. During the War, and into the 1950s in Britain, clothing in general was scarce and highly regulated. For example, skirts needed to be relatively short and slim, to conserve fabric. Just after the War, the French designer, Dior, came out with what was called his "New Look". The silhouette was a dramatic change from the restricted clothing during the War. Skirts were much longer and fuller, often with crinolines underneath to puff out the skirts. Waists were very small; sometimes achieved by a waist-cinching undergarment called a "merry widow".Stiletto heels first came into common use. The change had a look of extreme femininity, and greatly restricted movement.
The 'look' you're talking about has a lot to do with the photography, some of it still extraordinarily beautiful. Edward Steichen, Cecil Beaton, Irving Penn, and especially Richard Avedon were some of those taking these.
