Bavaria China

Ceramic is a survivor! If there is one thing that is in an archaeological dig, his pottery. Although the materials of wood, canvas and other have long since disappeared, perhaps not a full boat, perhaps only fragments of pottery, but usually enough to make a definitive date.
Those individuals who survive are often pre-history, which clearly shows the use of primitive humanity clay and water!
There several types of pottery and porcelain with a long forgotten history and is one like that we see here.
Lustre wares, ceramic glaze or is one of the earliest forms Decorative ceramic known and recognized as originating in the Middle East. Lustreware first appearance in Baghdad and Samarra in the ninth century AD.
At that time, Baghdad was the world's largest city and center of the Arab Abbasid empire great. Baghdad was a center studies in many universities where medicine, mathematics, astrology and taught science.
The arts flourished with the ruling caliphs who were great admirers and collectors of Chinese porcelain of the Tang Dynasty. Porcelain imported from China by the trade caravans traveling along the Silk Road.
It is always difficult to establish the accuracy of the information in the ages 9 and 10, but there are persistent stories of being abducted pottery centers of Chinese ceramics and taken to Baghdad. These "prisoners of ceramics" had to work with the expectation of porcelain that is produced.
Without kaolin clay and very specific to the production of porcelain available, potters Chinese unfortunate had to improvise with clay available and finally, develop white enamels in an attempt to mimic the appearance of the porcelain.
Nobody knows, either by accident or experiment, but the Chinese potters apply the techniques of making glass, the techniques so old its origins back to Egypt of the pharaohs.
It would be very interesting to know how and why these Chinese potters of the ninth century, so far from home, chose to decorate their pots with metallic pigments of Baghdad, but they did and thus, the ceramic glow is born!
consumer reaction Chandelier occurred almost instantaneously with iridescent gold enamel. At first it was considered alchemy because the process involves the use of lead-based glaze to create a golden glow on a pot, but no gold!
Gasoline Brightness is, of course, in addition to glaze enamels containing lead, copper, silver and even gold. Once triggered, such as dust, metallic pigments produced the brightest ever seen on a glossy ceramic body.
Following copper red, silver may result in a bright silver luster glaze, or sometimes gold. The range of bright colors is broad, including pink, yellow, purple, and the Canary moonlight to do name a few of the incredible range of colors.
The result was completely blind, relying entirely on the conditions of firing furnace with the result which is unpredictable.
On the technical side, the light elements needed three shots - the first fire, or hardening clay, second fire, or set the enamel and plain, and the third fire. This is the third time in the oven that produces the result of the brightness.
How ceramics were appointed in accordance with Islamic culture, with a pattern, such as flowers and foliage, or geometric patterns or stylized. Now painted decoration in the design selected, the suspension containing metallic particles.
The third fire, the temperature is important the lowest of three shots and in this critical period, the furnace is "lack of oxygen", with the metal compound chemically "reduced" base metal suspended. The results were and still are not always as expected!
Chandelier consumption has a high failure rate with examples remains bright. It is unusual, even for two examples of a sudden to look exactly the same thing - is that the unpredictability of results.
Baghdad, technology dissemination Syria and Egypt, where the process became more refined, with examples from the 12th century is still admired for her beauty. With the Arab influence in southern Spain, the elements of light has been adopted as a ceramic art Spanish as it was in the 15th century in Italy.
Chandelier consumption was not found in England until the early the 19th century when it was popularized by Spode and Wedgwood, with many more recognizable names, such as brightness and famous Wedgwood Sunderland 20. Fairy Land century brightness.
The lights shown (see the website of the company) are examples made during the first half of the 20th century and were produced by Thomas of Bavaria in period1920 -1930.
The company history starts in 1898 with the opening of the porcelain for the first time in the Bavarian town Marktredwitz and was known as the "Porzellanfabrik & Co Jaeger-Thomas." Thomas had what we now call "management problems." He and Jaeger were constant disputes, often ends with screams and lively discussion. Thus, in 1903, Thomas decided to create his own factory.
Since a few months before his departure he had secret talks with a new prospective member, Ens. Thomas has been easy, not to repeat its history of Jaeger. Ens Thomas was delighted because he is not interested in running business, or art direction, but just wanted to be an investor who gave birth to "Porzellanfabrik - Thomas & Ens" 1903. The new partnership was an immediate success and Thomas had the freedom of artistic expression that may desired.
Thomas was a so successful that soon attracted the attention of society much more Rosenthal. In 1908, Ens decided to look elsewhere for investment and Thomas said it was withdrawing its interest.
This is precisely what Rosenthal was waiting and quickly become a movement to become a major shareholder in 1908. This left Thomas as an independent subsidiary of Rosenthal until 1960. The company continued to maintain rights and trademarks of Thomas until 2004, when the brand was dropped.
