How to degrees in studio arts/visual communication differ from game design degrees from digipen?
Game development is very different than art and visual communication. There are degrees in game design which focus on the visual and creative side of game development, but without serious technical skills, such a program is utterly worthless.
There are NO jobs for game 'designers' who want to think up game ideas but can't add something substantial (especially programming or 3D modeling) to the mix. All game programmers are pretty decent game designers (or they would have become some other kind of programmer) and most 3D modelers also have very good game design ideas.
If you really want to work in the game industry, you need to concentrate on the skills desperately needed in that industry. Digipen has quite a good game development program, but it's difficult. It involves lots of math and computer science. There's no shortcut. Even if you go the 3D modeling route, you still need to understand math, physics, and physiology.
