Travel in Louisana recommendations, pls
Can you give me a short 10 day itenerary to enjoy Louisiana for 2 adults, a teen, and a 5 year old girl.
We'll start in New Orleans French Quarter for 4 days (Sat-Wed, and several days in Baton Rouge (Wed-Fri), but we have Fri-Mon left to fill in and would like to have an idea what else to do. Also we're not sure since we want to travel where the best swamp tour is (is it better in New Orleans or elsewhere). We definetly want to feel the Cajun, Creole, Arcadian adventure, need to know which plantation is the best, which swamp park is the best. It seems like every town has a swamp, a plantation, and everything else, but we'd like to find the ultimate of each to do in the state so we can best enjoy.
If you have a car, get a plantation map and drive to the plantations. Several are easy to find and not far from the city. You can hit several in one day. I love Oak Alley, Destrehan & the Myrtles. (Oak Alley & Myrtles have great restaurants and over night. Myrtles is supposed to be haunted - very popular.)
I like the swamp tour in LaPlace - about an hour west of New Orleans.)
There's not a whole lot to do in Baton Rouge, but the state capitol tour is interesting. I think one night in BR is plenty.
Don't forget to check out the Lafayette Area (west of Baton Rouge). This is real cajun country. The people are extremely friendly & awesome food (I love Prejeans - you can eat and cajun dance). There's still a lot of french speaking people in Lafayette.
Get a Gambit magazine when you get to town - free weekly news magazine of local events.) You can get it at any hotel or many businesses.
In New Orleans, check out the new insect exhibit at the zoo & aquarium. Take the zoo cruise on the Mississippi. Ride the streetcar down St. Charles Ave. Visit the children's museum, WWII museum.
French Quarter has lots of great things to do for families during the day. Night life is fun, but not for the little ones. You could visit Preservation Hall for great jazz at night with the kids. Be adventurous and get out of the French Quarter. Take a ride out to the lake front.
An interesting local hang out is Rock N Bowl where you can bowl, have a drink and hear some good music all at the same time.
On Sunday afternoon at Tipitina's there used to be cajun dancing (it's a bar, but some people bring kids.) Not sure if they still do this since Katrina. Very casual and fun. They used to serve Red Beans and Rice.
