Touring London's Best Royal Attractions
Buckingham Palace is far from being the only Royal attraction in London, which is strewn with palaces and landmarks that occupy a central position in the history of the Royal Family.
London has long occupied pride of place as one of the world's most historic cities, a status that owes much to its ancient and globally respected Royal Family. Indeed, the first stop for most tourists to London is Buckingham Palace, the monarch's residence since 1837 and currently home to the reigning Queen Elizabeth II.
However, Buckingham Palace is far from being the only Royal attraction in London. The capital is strewn with palaces and landmarks that occupy a central position in the history of the Royal Family and, as 2011 marks what is arguably the most high profile Royal marriage since that of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer in 1981, interest in these sites looks set to experience a resurgence over the coming year. But once you've already seen Buckingham Palace, how exactly should you continue with your Royal tour of the capital?
Buckingham Palace resides in the modern London district of Westminster so the most logical next stop for visitors is Westminster Abbey, where Prince William and Kate Middleton will get married in April 2011 and the traditional location of the monarch's coronation. Inside the Abbey, you'll see some of the finest Gothic architecture that the UK has to offer, as well as the graves and memorials of several notable literary figures including Geoffrey Chaucer, William Blake, Jane Austen, George Eliot, William Wordsworth and Charles Dickens. In addition, tourists are charged an entrance fee at Westminster Abbey but worshippers are allowed in for free.
Due to its popularity with visitors, hotels in London Westminster are easy to find. However, travel west from here and you'll see Kensington Palace, a residence that is still in use by some members of the Royal Family. Like Buckingham Palace, it is also very popular with tourists and has a strong association with Princess Diana, who continued to live here after her divorce. What's more, travellers who are particularly interested in the reign of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert will find plenty to occupy them across London.
The Royal Albert Hall in South Kensington, named by Victoria in memory of her deceased husband, opened in 1871 and is now one of the country's most prestigious concert venues. Its unique design makes it a much-photographed building in London and it has a spiritual link with the Albert Memorial, located to the north in Kensington Gardens.
Perhaps the most intriguing Royal sight in the capital is the Tower of London, which is world famous as the home of the crown jewels. The Tower's Jewel House has kept them safe since 1303 when they were stolen from Westminster Abbey before being quickly recovered. However, there's much more to this Royal attraction than this.
It's important to note that this attraction is not located near many of the city's most popular tourist sights, although there are many hotels near the tower of london
Founded in 1066 during the Norman conquest, the Tower is a spectacular testament to the Royal Family's centuries-long history. Its nightly Ceremony of the Keys is particularly popular, and has been performed every night for the last 800 years.
